Getting an RICS Chartered Surveyor to carry out a survey before you buy is essential if you don’t want to risk getting lumbered with lots of nasty hidden problems.
Surveyors act as your eyes and ears on site and can save you from getting stuck with a property that superficially looks OK but is actually harbouring expensive defects or even potential legal time-bombs.
But before arranging your survey there’s a lot you can find out yourself online. One of the most important factors to be aware of is local crime rates. Even the loveliest homes soon loose their appeal (and consequently sink in value) if the local area is afflicted by criminal activity.
